Cambridge-based Porotech has unveiled its second major alliance with a Taiwanese tech giant inside a month.

The company is partnering with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) to manufacture 200mm GaN-on-Silicon MicroLEDs for mass production.

Porotech (formally known as Poro Technologies Ltd) pioneers GaN-based semiconductor technology and is a highly rated global fabless MicroLED company. PSMC is one of the world’s leading semiconductor foundries.
Leveraging its Open Foundry platform, PSMC manufactures integrated circuits for electronic devices across broad and pervasive industries, with focuses on consumer electronics, the internet of things, electronic vehicles, and artificial intelligence.

The partnership with Porotech will expedite the production of brightest, high pixel density, smallest and low-cost MicroLEDs for displays with high yield manufacturing for consumer applications.

PSMC’s proprietary technologies in semiconductor front-end wafer manufacturing foundry combined with Porotech’s world leading technologies in PoroGaN® MicroLED-on-Silicon (uLEDoS), Dynamic Pixel Tuning® (DPT®), GaN-on-Silicon platform will ensure the commercialisation of MicroLED displays.

Mass producing the Porotech’s MicroLED-on-Silicon for pixelation in a semiconductor environment is a step ahead in commercialisation of displays for consumer application. PSMC’s strength in front-end semiconductor foundry is also expected to contribute during the mass production stage.

Both parties are enthusiastic about the potential outcome of MicroLED-on-Silicon for semiconductor manufacturing technology, capitalising on manufacturing precision for product performance, high volume and low-cost display applications.

Porotech CEO Dr Tongtong Zhu, said: “Our collaboration with PSMC signifies a momentous step forward for mass-producing the MicroLED-on-Silicon technology for display applications.

“This strategic partnership speaks volumes about our shared dedication to innovation and excellence. GaN on Silicon’s role in uLEDoS tech advancement is undeniable.

“An exciting road lies ahead with PSMC, propelling tremendous opportunity of commercialisation with our mutual partners and customers with collective triumph and significant growth in the MicroLED revolution!”

Martin Chu, Executive Vice-President of PSMC, added: “Our strategic alliance with Porotech is a huge step forward into the tremendous opportunities that MicroLEDs can bring to the world. We are excited to collaborate with Porotech to integrate so many technologies from different fields.”

Only last month Porotech joined forces with Taiwan’s Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) to advance MicroLED Microdisplays for Augmented Reality applications. Hon Hai is the world’s largest electronics manufacturer and technology service provider.

The partnership will assemble Porotech’s world leading technologies in PoroGaN® MicroLED-on-Silicon (uLEDoS), Dynamic Pixel Tuning® (DPT®), GaN-on-Silicon platform and Foxconn’s proprietary technologies in semiconductor wafer manufacturing, packaging, IC drivers, CMOS backplanes, module assembly and system assembly.

The end product will target ultra-high-density and energy efficient MicroLED Microdisplays for AR applications, wearable and smart devices.

Porotech is headquartered in Cambridge UK with an R & D Centre in Hsinchu (Taiwan) and sales office in Arizona in the US.
