Cambridge UK tech company Nu Quantum is expanding into the US market via Los Angeles. The quantum entanglement startup says there is a thriving quantum hub in LA which offers easy access to other technology hotspots like Silicon Valley.

Nu Quantum already has significant partnerships and customers in the United States and Canada and the expansion will help deepen and accelerate those relationships.

In a significant associated move Nu Quantum has appointed ex-IBM shining light Dr Bob Sutor as a non-executive director. Dr Sutor was a leader in IBM’s world-leading quantum efforts over his 39-year career at the company and is regarded as a leader of the quantum industry in the United States and elsewhere.

His appointment dovetails not only with Nu Quantum’s expansion into the US market but also its determination to push the quantum industry into its next phase of scalable networking towards greater commercialisation.

Dr Sutor is an industry veteran in many leading-edge technologies, including quantum, notably helping lead IBM Research projects and the quantum program for many years. He has been at the forefront of quantum computing since the emergence of the industry.

After IBM, he joined Infleqtion, a neutral-atom quantum technology company anchored in Boulder, Colorado and Oxford in the UK. He authored two books on quantum computing and AI, including Dancing with Qubits, Second Edition. In addition to joining Nu Quantum, he is now the Vice President and Practice Lead for Emerging Technologies at The Futurum Group and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Buffalo in New York.

Nu Quantum says its technology and proposition, to network and scale quantum computers into data centres, represents a more mature phase and ‘shifts the industry in mindset and infrastructure.’

CEO Carmen Palacios-Berraquero said: “Bob is a true titan of quantum computing. Having his belief in us and for him to give us his time and connections is a huge step change for us. It could not come at a better time as we look to expand further into the US market and grow as a company.”

Dr Sutor added: “Nu Quantum represents the required next phase for quantum computing to unlock its true potential. Without quantum networking, we will be limited to small systems that cannot help us achieve Practical Quantum Advantage for the use cases most important to society and industry.

“After seeing the advances and vision of Nu Quantum to push the technology and industry forward, I am honoured to join their journey and mission.”

Founded in 2018, Nu Quantum is a spin-out of the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory. Last November it raised an £8.5 million pre-series A round from main investors Amadeus Capital Partners, Expeditions Fund, and IQ Capital.
