Open silicon ecosystem organisation, lowRISC CIC, spun out of the University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory where its early work was supported by a private donation and a grant from Google.

In 2018, Google launched the OpenTitan project together with lowRISC and its partners to make a completely transparent and trustworthy secure silicon platform.

In 2024 the OpenTitan coalition clinched a historic milestone via the first open-source silicon project to reach commercial availability with validated chips in hand.
