Suffolk Agricultural Association reports that the Suffolk Farm Business Competition is back again in 2012 and will be bigger and better than ever with a slightly new format.Entry forms will soon be available for the competition, which seeks to find the best large, medium and small farms in the county.
In a change to the usual format, winners this year will be announced at a prestigious celebratory awards dinner to be held at Trinity Park in October along with the winners of the BALE Award, the Association’s regional diversification competition.
The Farm Business Competition is separated into the three categories. The ‘small farms’ category is for farms of up to 250 hectares, the ‘medium farms’ category is for farms with between 251-499 hectares and the ‘large farms’ category is for those with over 500 hectares.
Each category is judged with a first to third placing and there are special awards within each for Best Livestock, Best Conservation and Best Arable Crop.
Judging will take place on June 18 and 19 and this year’s judges are from Herefordshire.
Christopher Bushby, executive director of Suffolk Agricultural Association, said: “Suffolk farmers are at the cutting edge of agriculture in the UK and this competition demonstrates the calibre of farms we have in our county.
“The association is keen to ensure its competitions stay relevant to the competitors and a review was held earlier this year with some minor changes made to the judging criteria.
“We are very excited about introducing a Rural Awards Dinner in the Autumn which will celebrate all our winners and promote all that is great about agriculture in the region.”
Farms are judged on a range of criteria. The management of the farm as a business is the main focus of the judging, whilst the farm’s sustainability and its social and community involvement are also considered.
Entry for the competition is £20 and all entrants will receive an invitation for two to the Awards Dinner in October. Entrants must be a member of the Suffolk Agricultural Association.
Closing date for entry forms is Friday June 8.
